Documentaire: Dark Tourist
Dark Tourist: Rondstrompelen in nucleaire gebieden. Doden opgraven om ze ‘op te frissen’. De grens tussen Mexico en de VS oversteken. De Nieuw-Zeelandse journalist David Farrier ‘onderging’ het ten behoeve van zijn nieuwe documentaire. Deze nieuwe serie ging op 20 juli dit jaar in première. Na het kijken van de trailer verwachtte ik ofwel een semi-suïcidale adrenaline freak. Ofwel een zeer gedreven journalist die tot het uiterste gaat voor zijn werk.
Niet gek gezien zijn intro:
“Ik ben David Farrier. Ik heb me altijd aangetrokken gevoeld tot de rare kant van het leven. Dus ik heb besloten onderzoek te doen naar dark tourism. Een wereldwijd fenomeen, waarbij mensen kiezen voor een vakantie op plaatsen die verband houden met verwoesting en met de dood. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in ’t gekke, lugubere en ziekelijke.”
Gewapend met enkel nieuwsgierigheid ging de journalist op zoek naar plekken die andere ‘dark tourists’ aantrekken. Plekken op de wereld die relateren aan dood en verderf, oorlog en ziekte. Het is wat anders is dan de reisprogramma’s met overenthousiaste hosts die naar populaire plekken gaan die aanslaan bij een brede doelgroep. Dat is de reden waarom ik deze documentaire ben gaan kijken.
Dark Tourist in een Notendop
Het eerste -en tot nu toe enige seizoen- bestaat uit 8 afleveringen van ongeveer 40 minuten.
De afleveringen vinden hun onderscheid in het gebied waar ze zijn opgenomen.

– ontmoeting met de huurmoordenaar van Pablo Escobar
– getuige zijn van een demonen uitdrijving in Mexico
– excursie waar de ‘border-crossing’ Mexico > de VS nagebootst wordt

Wat ik vond van Dark Tourist
Ik vond de documentaire leuk en was zomaar door de afleveringen heen. In een aantal andere reviews (o.a. deze) wordt David Farrier omschreven als incapabele interviewer. Ik vond hem daarentegen wél goed in zijn communicatie. Omdat hij naar mijn mening prettig is om te volgen. Soms bleven er bij mij vragen hangen aan het einde van een onderwerp, maar het stoorde me niet. En ok, de Nederlandse ondertitelaar kan wel een cursus ‘d/dt’ gebruiken. Maar als je daar doorheen kunt kijken is het echt een prima serie.
Het viel mij op dat David Farrier helemaal niet zo’n creep is als ik verwacht had. Hij heeft óók zijn grenzen, waardoor ik het gemakkelijker vond me in hem te verplaatsen en me mee te laten slepen. Dat er wel degelijk creeps in de documentaire voorkomen, wordt overigens snel duidelijk. De docu omvat topics die ik totaal niet extreem vond, maar wel goed om bij stil te staan. Gek dat er bijvoorbeeld in Colombia geld wordt verdiend aan Pablo Escobar, door mensen die destijds door hem onderdrukt werden.
Tot slot kent de documentaire niet altijd een duidelijke structuur. Soms snapte ik de opbouw of de keuzes van onderwerpen niet helemaal. Er is veel gekkigheid en door de kritische maar sarcastische opmerkingen van David Farrier was het ook wel weer grappig. Af en toe verschuift de focus van de documentaire, hiermee een stuk bewustwording wordt gecreëerd.
Mijn conclusie is dat de documentaire Dark Tourist een aanrader is. Ik hoop op een tweede seizoen.
